Kabushka Burger

Kabushka Burger

We have been eating, and loving Kabushka Burgers since I was a little girl.  I wanted a little history on this fabulous sammy, and the two women in my life who made this recipe are no longer here. So, I went to the matriarch of our family, the person who has seen me at my best and my worst and still loves me anyways, a truly amazing woman I am lucky to call family, my sweetest Tante (Danish word for “aunt”), or, as the rest of the family calls her, Aunt Jan (awww, so sad for them).  She didn’t know either, which really shocked me.  She knows everything!  So, I thought I would check the internet for a definition…”kabushka meaning not found”.  Ummm, what?  Seriously?  That MUST be wrong.  My Mac kept telling me that I wanted “babushka”, which means “grandmother” in Poland or Russia.  No, I did not want “babushka”.  Clearly my Mac and I need a chat.  So, I say I need to fix this problem…my definition is as follows: Kabushka (Burger): an oddly named dish~that sounds weird to say but is so very delicious~that resembles sloppy joes and is composed of sauerkraut, Chicken Gumbo soup and ground beef and does not mean “grandmother”.  There.  I will inform Wikipedia and let them know I have solved the dilemma.

kabushka

Such a funny, odd name for food, I know, and people will scrunch up their noses and give me the occasional eye roll when I tell them about the famed Kabushka Burgers our family has loved for years.  I get it.  Sauerkraut?  Ground beef?  Together on a bun with mayo (a MUST!)?  I would totally do the same thing.  But, one bite of these and you will understand!  I promise.   If you do not like sauerkraut, then this dish is not for you, so please feel free to stop reading any further (funny, maybe I should have written that at the beginning of this post).  I won’t be offended.  I do feel sad, however, because you will have missed out on a great dish, but it’s ok.  I will carry on.

Sláinte!

PS~there really is no possible way known to man to get good imagery of sauerkraut that has been cooked for several hours, so I apologize!  They honestly taste a million times better than they look.
